One of Johann Sebastian Bach's keyboard masterpieces is his Goldberg Variations.  Consisting of 30 variations on an aria, its original publication was titled Keyboard Practice, consisting of an Aria with diverse Variations for the Harpsichord with two manuals.  Composed for enjoyment for music lovers by Johann Sebastian Bach, Royal Polish and Electoral Saxon Count Kapellmeister and Choirmaster in Leipzig. In a musical first, we will present this 32-part piece in a performance by 32 musicians!

At the reception afterwards, we will show a brief video featuring William Goldberg playing one of the Goldberg variations.  Now 84 and living in Maine, Mr. Goldberg was a long-time Northport resident and private piano teacher who taught some of the performers above.

This unique event was conceived and organized by Isabella Eredita Johnson.

Read the pianist's biographies.

The structure of this 1742 piece is quite intricate.  The variations are arranged as ten groups of three, with every third being a canon and each canon involving a larger interval than the previous.  For a detailed description see this analysis.

Postscript

Here is the article Newsday ran about it.  (By Caryn Eve Murray, May 27, 2001, p. G3.)

This was followed by two articles about the concert in Clavier magazine (the June/July 2001 issue, pp. 28-29).  One is "An Experiment Bach would Enjoy with 32 Goldberg Recitalists" by Carol Montparker.  The other is "For the Love of Bach" by Isabella Eredita Johnson.

Follow Up

The next concert, involving 34 pianists in a performance of Beethoven's "Diabelli" variations, is planned for April 19th, 2002.
